Please note that these document requirements only apply to police checks being completed through the Australian Federal Police (AFP) national police check. ACIC Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check (NCCHC) document requirements are different. Please see the Identity Document Requirements (ACIC checks) article on our knowledge base for further information.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) national police checks have specific identity document requirements. VerifyNow (trading as Accurate Background) is required to follow these requirements from the AFP and will not be able to process your police check until you have met the requirements. Please see list below of the required identity documents for your application.

You are required to provide:

  • At least ONE Primary document
  • Foreign documents must be accompanied by an official translation

A minimum of 100 points of identification has to be provided with an application. The following checklist can be used when preparing your identification documents. Take note of the ‘required on document’ column below, to ensure that provided ID meets the required standard.

It is important that all photos or scans of these documents are clear and easy to read. If the details on the page cannot be seen, or parts are cut off, then your application may be returned to you for further clarification.

Our verification team will attempt to verify your identity with the personal information provided on this form. The personal information contained in your identity documents may be used to conduct other checks listed in the application screening package.

When uploading documents, please note:

  • our preferred file types are PDF, JPG or PNG;
  • file size below 3MB where possible;
  • ensure documents maintain appropriate resolution for viewing. If the uploaded documents are not viewable, we will request for them to be uploaded again.

The documentation you provide must include evidence of your full name, date of birth and a photograph of you. If a photograph is not provided on the identity documents presented, a passport-style photograph certified by a person listed in Schedule 2 of the Statutory Declarations Regulations 1993 (Cth) can be accepted in addition to the required documents.

Examples

  •  Jane Smith is required to obtain an AFP check. She has chosen to provide:
  1. A foreign passport (current) as her primary document, worth 70 points.
  2. An Australian Driver licence as an additional primary document, worth 40 points

Jane has provided her foreign passport as a primary document. However, as it is a foreign document, it is required to be accompanied by an official translation to be valid. Jane provides this with her passport. She has also provided an Australian drivers licence. Jane has provided 110 points, which is above the 100 points required. She has met the identity requirements.

  •  Sam James is required to obtain an AFP check. He has chosen to provide:
  1. A Defence force identity card as his primary document, worth 40 points.
  2. A Department of Veteran Affairs (DVA) card as a secondary document, worth 40 points.
  3. A Medicare card, worth 25 points.

Sam’s provided documents are all Australian, and do not need any accompanying translations. He has provided 105 points of ID, so he has met the identity requirements.

  •  Charlotte Baker is required to obtain an AFP check. She has chosen to provide:
  1. A full birth certificate, worth 70 points
  2. A property lease agreement (current address), worth 25 points
  3. A utility bill (current address, less than 12 months old), worth 20 points.

Charlotte’s provided documents are all Australian, and do not need any accompanying translations. However, as Charlotte’s provided documents do not include a photo, she must provide VerifyNow with a certified passport-style photograph in addition to her documents. Charlotte has now provided 115 points of ID, so she has met the identity requirements.
